SAVE PANTHER HOLLOW!

The three words above are easy to say, but they present a tremendous challenge to our longtime residents in stopping a proposed roadway corridor through the heart of Panther Hollow. This plan, which was initiated by Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto, will eventually destroy our beloved Italian neighborhood.

When last month’s Panther Hollow article in La Nostra Voce was written and submitted for publication, the community had received no notice about this devastating plan from the mayor’s office or our councilman’s office. We hope you had an opportunity to read the article in last month’s edition and have visited the website www.PantherHollow.us.

Last month’s issue also had an article about Geraldine Ferraro, the first Italian- American to run on a national ticket. Ferraro ran as the 1984 vice-presidential candidate with presidential candidate Walter Mondale. The article mentioned that Ferraro was angered by the injustice of being associated with organized crime simply because of her heritage, but that her greatest anger was for an Italian community that remained silent and let others shape events.

We hope that you will help to create a new paradigm. Call Mayor Peduto at (412) 255-2626 and ask him to abandon this roadway project that will destroy one of Pittsburgh’s first Italian neighborhoods. Also call Councilman Bruce Kraus at (412) 255-2130 and convey the same message.

Defining moments are life changing and this could be one for you.You can walk away from this problem, or you can decide to stick your neck out for this com- munity. We ask that you imagine yourself in the future, looking back to the present. We hope you will then say: I became involved and made a difference to SAVE PANTHER HOLLOW.
